Books
for Babies
It is never too early to start
reading to your baby. They love the sound of your voice, and
hearing the rhythm of words helps develop their brains. Before
they are a year, they'll likely try to eat the book more than
anything, but that's okay. Let them play. Once they figure out
how to turn pages, they will probably do so before you're even
finished reading that page. Let them. Let reading be a fun
time for them, and then, as they grow, they'll listen more and
more.
Here are my favourites (for more see my baby
shower page), with links to some of them below.
- Asch, Frank. I Can Roar
Like a Lion, and others.
- Brown, Margaret Wise. Goodnight
Moon.
- Carle, Eric. The Very
Hungry Caterpillar, and others.
- Eastman, Philip. Are You
My Mother?
- Hill, Eric. Spot, and
others.
- Inkpen, Mike. Wibbly Pig,
and others.
- Krauss, Ruth. A Hole is to
Dig.
- Martin, Bill Jr. Brown
Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
- Mother Goose,
and other nursery rhymes.
- Playskool, Baby Faces
(the playskool one is the best we’ve found)
- Tafuri, Nancy. Have
You Seen My Duckling.
- VanFleet, Matthew. Fuzzy
Yellow Ducklings (our all time favourite!)
- Waddell, Martin. Little
Bear, and others.
- Wheels on the Bus,
and other books of songs.
The Very Hungry
Caterpillar helps children count and learn the days of the
week, while being repetitive (which kids love) and having
places to touch and feel. A winner!
Brown Bear, Brown bear teaches colours and rhythms. Kids will quickly
memorize this book and "read" it to themselves, many
before they're 2!
Wibbly Pig is too
precious for words, and in this book of "hide and
seek" children lift flaps to find all the hidden pigs.
One duckling has gone missing, off chasing a butterfly, and mother
duck asks various pond residents where her duckling is, not
resting until she finds it. On each page children have to find
the missing duck.
Sing along with this
children's favourite as you watch the different riders on the
bus. Kids love songs, and music is a wonderful way to
reinforce language.
